Metal Fatigue Failure

Metal Fatigue Failure

Metal Fatigue Failure Theory and Design Considerations

This article is a basic introduction to the mechanism of metal fatigue failure where parts break after a period of time in service. Explanations of accepted theories are provided and relevant design practices to reduce metal fatigue are presented and explained. [Read more…]

Using rain-flow counting methods for process wear out studies

Using rain-flow counting methods for process wear out studies

Guest Post Prepared by Eugene Danneman, Wind Wear LLC

Introduction

Analyzing and visualizing data that is related to equipment wear-out (fatigue stage) over a specific time span is a challenge. Analyzing systems, equipment and components exposed to spectrum loading as opposed to uniform cyclical loading that span years or decades or centuries requires a special approach. Think of roads, bridges and other assets with long life spans that are susceptible to wear out mechanisms caused by external and internal loads, varying load durations, temperature swings and corrosion. Failure Modes and Mechanisms

Failure Modes and Mechanisms

When something fails, what should we do?

A natural question when something fails is

Why did it fail?

The answer is not always obvious or easy to sort out.

One of my favorite examples was on a circuit board that had a small burn mark where a component exploded off the board. The customer didn’t notice that missing part, our engineering team did that. [Read more…]

Root Cause Knowledge and Models

Root Cause Knowledge and Models

Two short questions to evaluate your knowledge of failure mechanisms (root causes) and common reliability models. The answers will be posted in a comment, later.

Which of the following failure root causes is most likely NOT due to power line variation (electronic-based product)?

A. Circuit design margin exceeded
B. Power dissipation
C. In-rush current response
D. Mechanical fatigue [Read more…]

Life Testing Question

Life Testing Question

Hi Fred,

I would take this opportunity to ask the reliability guru about bathtub curve for hardware reliability. I am running 27 units for life test for a million cycles around 555 hours. I have one failure at 300,000 cycles, and the rest of the units are running fine. Would this be classified as an early life failure? Also, how do I make a determination of when the early life failure time interval ends and constant failure rate starts in this example based on failure rate of remaining units? Thanks. [Read more…]

Reading a Datasheet

Reading a Datasheet

Reading a datasheet to determine a reliability value may take some investigative work. Whenever I see a fit rate based on failure-free testing, I am curious about how they did the testing and the calculations. [Read more…]
