QDD 009 About Using Slide Decks for Technical Design Reviews

QDD 009 About Using Slide Decks for Technical Design Reviews

About Using Slide Decks for Technical Design Reviews

A danger of using slide decks for technical design reviews is loss of important technical information. In order to summarize something in a slide or slide deck, the presenter thins-out information without its raw data and divorces it from the plots, graphs, and other technical analyses.

Slide decks are useful to the presenter to pull together a meeting. Slide decks are terrible for the reviewers who need to review technical information and make decisions from it.

In this episode, I review some alternatives:

  • eliminating slide decks all together; use the technical report with executive summary and a 10 minute study hall at the top of the meeting
  • very sparse slide deck content, instead referencing the completed technical report
  • a report formatted with all the details like Nancy Duarte’s Slidedocs®, a hybrid between a technical document and a slide

MD 165 Journey to Reliability: The Roadmap for Success with Dan Moss

MD 165 Journey to Reliability: The Roadmap for Success with Dan Moss

MD 165 Journey to Reliability: The Roadmap for Success with Dan Moss

Over the past decade, facility equipment reliability has been elevated from an often vague ideal to a mission-critical goal with benefits that outweigh both cost and complexity. As a result, well-run organizations now consider reliability to be an important element of their strategic and tactical plans and initiatives. This new reality impacts nearly every function, from procurement to maintenance, repair, and operations inventory management.

Over the same period, savvy plant management has also embraced the philosophy that maximum reliability requires more than well-functioning equipment. What other correlated activities must organizations also engage in?

In this week’s episode of Maintenance Disrupted, Blair Fraser welcomes Dan Moss, VP Operations at Performance Consulting Associates otherwise known as PCA to talk about the Journey to Reliability: The Roadmap for Success.

Effort versus Outcomes

Abstract

Chris and Fred discuss what it means to focus on ‘effort’ instead of ‘outcomes.’ We often think we focus on outcomes only … but how many people ‘get by’ simply by being ‘seen’ around the office, looking busy when there, and otherwise being friendly to everyone? They always volunteer to be part of a team, do some of the ‘less glamorous’ tasks, and otherwise be ‘part of something.’ But is this person actually valuable? (… harsh as the question sounds).

RM 069: Part 2 of an Interview with Me (Mike Konrad) on the Pick-Place Podcast with Chris Denney and Melissa Hough

Part 2 of an Interview with Me (Mike Konrad) on the Pick-Place Podcast with Chris Denney and Melissa Hough

Episode 69:

I was privileged to be a guest on the Pick-Place Podcast with Chris Denney (Worthington Assembly) and Melissa Hough (CircuitHub). This is the second of a two-part interview.

In this episode we are joined by Mike Konrad to chat about board cleaning. Mike founded Aqueous Technologies in 1992 in response to the Montreal Protocol and the resulting international treaty banning most popular cleaning/defluxing solvents. Their board cleaning equipment assists manufacturers with increasing product reliability while saving both water and energy, reducing the industry’s environmental impact.

In addition to being the President of Aqueous Technologies, he is also a fellow podcaster and runs the Reliability Matters Podcast, which discusses reliability of circuit assemblies, reliability “best practices” and success stories.

In the first part of this conversation we delve into the history of board cleaning, the electronics the industry’s transition to primarily using no-clean flux, and why more and more companies are reintroducing board cleaning back into their assembly process.

This episode gets us into the nitty gritty details of how to implement a proper circuit board cleaning process.

Melissa Hough may be reached here:

Remaking Risk-Based Decisions: Allowing Ourselves to Change our Minds.

Recent news highlights an accident involving a product with tragic results. This podcast explores this as cautionary tale and example outside of our own design house. The goal is to shift our perspectives to let us gain a better understanding of risk-based decisions.

We also talk about allowing ourselves room to change our minds about risk acceptability when we learn new information, both during the design process and from the field.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Reliability Discussions

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Reliability Discussions

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Reliability Discussions

podcast episode with speaker Fred Schenkelberg

Only some discussions about reliability go well. Some conversations make it obvious reliability is an afterthought or considered a barrier to creating and shipping products. Other conversations seem to support reliability work, yet really are little more than lip service. Then, there are meaningful conversations that improve the reliability culture within the organization. [Read more…]

Crucial Decision with Ryan Sitton

Welcome Ryan Sitton to the podcast. Ryan is the founder and CEO of Pinnacle Engineering and has spent a lot of time around reliability and production engineering. Notably, he is the author of “Crucial Decisions”; a book that we will discuss in the episode and how it applies to maintenance and reliability.

More about Ryan:

He has a mechanical engineering background and has worked at a gas company called Oxy and also worked as an Energy Regulator for the State of Texas. He has a PhD in Data Science and is the founder of Pinnacle Engineering.

Data Science has become an inevitable necessity in that; data plays a crucial role in what we tend to accomplish in our daily activities.

In this episode we covered:

  • What is a crucial decision? What makes it different from other ordinary decisions in a facility?
  • What types of crucial decisions brought about the issues we saw in Texas Big Freeze?
  • How does risk assessment fit into decision making? Do we underestimate or overestimate risk?
