Education and Training in Maintenance & Reliability with Shon Isenhour
This episode of the weekly podcast focuses on the education and training in maintenance and reliability. It is very important to practically implement the knowledge because that’s where you begin to develop skills and then you can improve those skills by continuously being a part of the applications in the field. The organizations like SMRP and eruditiollc.com help new people in the field of reliability by educating them first and then driving them to apply what they have learned. They help you whenever you need but they encourage the practice of self-driven learning because that is what helps you in the long run.
Now, the organizations can have their own education and training programs too but they really need to build these programs around the true education and that should be further in coherence with the roles and responsibilities of their employees. You can’t just force people to learn something unless they are properly motivated and then they become self-motivated by applying their knowledge and seeing the results of these applications.
You can only implement those programs successfully if you are training the people by mapping out the business processes of your organization. There are a lot of organizations that provide you their services for training in maintenance and reliability but unless the processes are not aligned with responsibilities, you will never get what you need from your employees or training advisors. The selection is a training advisor company is based on what are your requirements and learning objectives and whether that company will be able to tailor a training program according to your organization’s training scheme or not.
Then the purpose of training should be to create awareness among the people and driving them towards the applications of the training so that they can see what’s in it for them. Then comes the content of the training which depends on the abilities of the instructor because he is the one leading the program here. He needs to be passionately not only about the subject of the training but also he needs to have the passion for education. Then comes the leadership that is the backbone of every training program because they are driving the change and they need to be responsible in order to do that by asking the right questions at all times.
The next important thing is the selection of a mentor that will be able to provide the mentoring and coaching in the field. That personality needs to be able to connect with the students if he is ever going to make them understand what they are supposed to do. He needs to be calm, encouraging, and supportive at all times and need to communicate through the best means possible. You can use e-learning or traditional learning for training but make sure that the training is interactive and engaging where people are comfortable making mistakes and ask for help if they need. The message needs to be consistent with the purpose of the training.
