Risk is uncertainty. Will this work? How will this item fail? Is it safe? Risk is not limited to product failure, including brand topics such as market acceptance, regulatory approval, supply chain stability, international conflicts, and more. Reliability engineering tends to focus on product failure to perform as expected, and we must fit into the large context of risks facing any product or system. [Read more…]

We’re excited to welcome Bobby Lee on this episode. He started in the maintenance field in his early twenties. He got a two-year degree in Industrial Systems Technologies, after which he worked at Baxter Healthcare. He then proceeded to work for American Zinc Products as a reliability engineer for nearly one and a half years. From there, he joined Eruditio where he’s currently a reliability engineer. During those years, Bobby got involved with implementing reliability engineering programs, FMEAs, RCAs, among others. He’s also managed to get his CMRP, which is what we’d like to know more about.

Chris and Fred discuss what performance actually means. When it comes to reliability engineering … is this simply having fewer failures? NO! There is plenty more to reliability engineering than simply taking a ‘thing’ and simply making it work for longer. How can reliability engineering make more appealing, more functional, and less expensive products? Listen to this podcast for more!

Tim interviews Shane about his new book, “Decoding Mechanical Failure”, how physical evidence from a failed part can suggest specific kinds of failures, and situations where the data might point in one direction but the physical evidence point in a different direction.

Chris and Fred discuss how we use standards for reliability engineering, safety, and other similar fields. Standards have a place in everything we do. But issues come when we stop thinking about the thing we are creating and rely on the standards to guide really important decisions. Why is this silly? Listen to the podcast!

We’re thrilled to have the chairman of ICML, Bryan Johnson, with us. He’s worked at the Palo Verde Generating Station for 30 nearly years as a lubrication engineer. Bryan’s also involved with ASTM, starting about three decades ago. That was due to the creation of an on-site oil testing lab. This became a subcommittee that deals only with the condition monitoring of lubricants.
