Statistics for Reliability Engineers

In this episode, we speak with Luke De Jager about Statistics and how much of it is necessary for Reliability Engineers. Understanding of Statistics remains an important aspect of any Reliability Engineers job. We talk about different distributions, why not use MTBF, and what is required to perform a good data analysis.

Ensuring Transformer Reliability with Howard Penrose

It is my pleasure to welcome Howard Penrose back to the podcast.

In this episode we covered:

  • Why are electrical reliability or electrical assets neglected?
  • What are the major types of transformers?
  • If we detect a high level of moisture in the oil, do we change the oil or is it a little more complicated than that?

SOR 726 Statistics, Mechanisms, Facilitation

Statistics, Mechanisms, Facilitation

Abstract

Chris and Fred discuss how statistics, mechanisms, and other technical words that come from ‘reliability engineering’ in contrast to softer terms like ‘facilitation.’ This comes from discussions Chris has had during his Statistical Process Control (SPC) course that he has run previously. So what is the big deal about these words? Well … you can know everything there is to know about statistics and failure mechanisms – but if you can’t make things better then it is all for nothing!

A Conversation about Electric Vehicles with Indium’s Brian O’Leary

One of my favorite subjects is the electrification of automobiles, not just electric cars, which are with us now, but completely autonomous vehicles. When I was a kid in the 1960’s, we were promised flying cars by the year 2000. While that goal was not met, the real prospect of autonomous vehicles in our lifetime is extremely exciting, terrifying, and realistic.

Brian and I discuss the future of the automobile industry and what’s required for the electronics industry and the world.

QDD 041 Getting Comfortable with using Reliability Results

QDD 041 Getting Comfortable with using Reliability Results

Getting Comfortable with using Reliability Results

We want to engage a reliability engineer in an analysis for our product design. They can help us produce some great information from which we can make decisions. You might be feeling uncomfortable about our team making a design decision based on those results. You don’t quite understand how the reliability engineer came up with the answer. You want to know where that information comes from so you can gauge the level of project risk of our decision.

We peel-back the curtain on reliability engineering methods. We explore reliability engineering’s roots and development, from the 1950’s through today, to better understand the results of an analysis. Having a general understanding of reliability methods can help us get comfortable with using the results.
