The Frustrations of Reliability: From Strategy to Synergy with Bob Latino and Ken Latino

Welcome Bob and Ken Latino to the Podcast. Bob has been to this Podcast before discussing defect elimination and is an author involved with RCA and other reliability items. Briefly, Ken, can you introduce yourself.

I worked with Bob and my other brother at our family businesses called Reliability Centre for about 15 years. I later left for a small start up called Meridian being involved in reliability softwares.  I also worked as a reliability manager at a Paper Mill for 10 years then went to GE. Presently doing consulting work Prelical.

In this episode we covered:

  • There is a lot of frustration in reliability. Where do you see it comin from?
  • What do you think reliability means to any plant manager or operations manager out there?
  • How do we break this cycle of frustrations?

QDD 059 Product Design from a Marketing Viewpoint, with Laura Krick (A Chat with Cross Functional Experts)

Product Design from a Marketing Viewpoint, with Laura Krick (A Chat with Cross Functional Experts)

This interview focuses on product design from a marketing viewpoint, including sales and commercial operations.

“A Talk with Cross Functional Experts” is a Quality during Design interview series. Our focus is speaking with people that are typically part of a cross-functional team for new product development. We discuss their viewpoints and perspectives regarding new products, the values they bring to new product development, and how they’re involved and work with product design engineering teammates.

Laura Krick

Today we speak with Laura Krick, a VP for a global medical device manufacturer (who has, since our interview, been promoted to Chief Commercial Officer – congratulations!). She’s involved in marketing, sales, and commercial operations for new product development.

We talk about these topics:

  • Her background and what led her to her current role.
  • Her roles in new product development, including her hands-on commercial operations perspective.
  • Developing the user experience through data, iteration, and relationships with early adopters.
  • Reasons and methods for product design engineers to get into the field.
  • Ways for product design engineers to utilize the knowledge base of sales, marketing, and commercial operations reps in their cross-functional team.
  • Having fun being part of a risk management activity (!)
  • Her recommended books and authors for engineers.

Listen to a Chat with Laura. Gain a different perspective and get actionable advice.

Prioritizing Initiatives with Paul Daoust

Welcome Paul to the Podcast. Paul is the founder of Scio Asset Management. Although, briefly, tell us about yourself.

I have almost 30 years experience in engineering reliability maintenance and both strategic and holistic asset management. At Scio we are providing frameworks for leadership in asset management that is based on first principle decision making. Also launching Assetiers that is a platform for leaders to discuss the challenges that we have in asset management.

In this episode we covered:

  • There are challenges in prioritising where to allocate resources in asset management. Have you seen this?
  • How do we prioritise the initiatives that are already in place such as lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, 5S and reliability maintenance?
  • There are diminishing returns in pursuing reliability best practice. Do we always have to be the best in class in these practices?

Huge announcement… WE WROTE A BOOK!

In this episode of the Maintenance Mavericks Podcast, Ryan speaks to contributors, Sanya Mathura, James Reyes-Pickell, and Ramesh Gulati.

Back in 2021, UpKeep brought maintenance, reliability, and operations teams together in a new approach called Asset Operations Management. Now, we’ve written a book on the topic of Asset Operations, and why it is critical for the future of our industry!

This book would not have been possible without contributions from the UpKeep team, our customers, the community, and also our Subject Matter Experts! And, we are excited to welcome some of the SMEs who have contributed to the book on today’s episode!

All proceeds from this book are donated to fund educational opportunities for members of UpKeep’s The Maintenance Community to help up-level members’ careers and their industries as a whole.

For more information, and to purchase a copy of the book, please visit www.upkeep.com/asset-operations-book.

QDD 058 UFMEA vs. DFMEA

QDD 058 UFMEA vs. DFMEA

UFMEA vs. DFMEA

FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) is a super-tool for a team, especially when developing concepts and requirements. Done early, iteratively, and treated as a “living” analysis helps teams throughout development and beyond.

Some people seem to either love it or hate it. I don’t have a strong reaction like that, but I do think it can be a valuable option for teamwork and design – so much so that I’ve dedicated a few episodes to it (including this one). We touch on some of the objections to it, too.

FMEAs can have different focuses and can be built to suit the goals of the team. There are two FMEAs, in particular, that can be done in the early concept stages of development: “use” UFMEA and “systems design” DFMEA.

  • What is the difference between these two FMEAs?
  • How do they relate to one another?
  • Should we do both of them?
  • What do we do with the information?

How to Take the Guess Work out of Expert Judgment

How to Take the Guess Work out of Expert Judgment

How to Take the Guess Work out of Expert Judgment

podcast episode with speaker Chris Jackson

Most humans can be quite technically minded. And sometimes we aren’t. Sometimes, we expect every drug or medical procedure to be checked, approved, validated, and tested on other people (et cetera) before subjecting ourselves to whatever our doctor suggests. At other times, we spend lots of money at casinos (note that I said ‘spend’ and not ‘invest’ or ‘win’). When it comes to reliability, we can sometimes be too technically minded. A reliability ‘number’ might not exist until our product has undergone exhaustive testing. Which can often be two years too late to do anything about if it turns out it doesn’t meet all our reliability dreams. So what can we do? Well … why spend money trying to generate information (through lengthy tests) when you can use the information stored in everyone’s brain? The most common answer (even if we don’t want to admit it) is that this sounds like guesswork. And guesswork can sound unprofessional. Or it’s just wrong. But there are ways you can suck out information from a group of experts in a quantifiable and remarkably accurate way. Want to learn more? This webinar introduces you to some of the concepts that might interest you.

RM 096: A Conversation with Industry Gurus Phil Zarrow and Jim Hall about their New Book

A Conversation with Industry Gurus Phil Zarrow and Jim Hall about their New Book

A couple of episodes ago, I talked to Dr. and Professor Ron Lasky about a couple of books he wrote. He also recommended a book he didn’t write. That book is titled Troubleshooting Electronic Assembly: Wisdom from the BoardTalk Crypt by industry gurus Phil Zarrow and Jim Hall available on Amazon (both were prior guests on this show). Well today, we’ll have a conversation with Phil and Jim about their book.

If you’ve been in the electronic assembly industry for some time, there’s little doubt that you haven’t heard of Phil Zarrow and Jim Hall. Phil has been involved with PCB fabrication and assembly for more than 35 years. Phil is the President and Principal Consultant of ITM Consulting.

Jim Hall has been involved in the electronic assembly industry for the past 26 years. He’s a principal consultant and resident Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt with ITM Consulting. He’s also an instructor in the Lean Six Sigma programs offered at Dartmouth College. Together with Dr. Ron Lasky, Phil and Jim designed the SMTA’s SMT Processes Certification Course.

Phil and Jim host the popular audio series “Board Talk” on Circuit-Insight.
