Consider Plausible Failure Modes for Your Operating Environment

Iโ€™ve driven this route at least 3,000 times in the last 12 years. If you asked me if I would ever see a Tupperware-bowl-full of cut honeydew melonโ€ฆor a pair of sneakers and an orange sitting atop a highway barrier, I would have said โ€œ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ.โ€

Yet both things happened within three months of each otherโ€ฆafter driving this route for 12 years.

What does this have to do with your

As responsible custodians, itโ€™s our job to consider ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ญ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฃ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ Failure Modes for our Operating Environment so we can proactively decide how we will manage each one.

If we donโ€™t, to a significant degree, we put ourselves at the mercy of equipment failure. That leads to serious โ€œ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐— ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒโ€ and we find ourselves and our team members โ€œ๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ณ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—บ ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐Ÿ”ฅ.โ€

Thatโ€™s no way to live.

Sure, Tupperware and oranges donโ€™t really matter to me on my route to work. But hereโ€™s the point.

It happened.

Hereโ€™s an example of what ๐——๐—ข๐—˜๐—ฆ matter.

Letโ€™s say I get a flat tire. No problem. I have a spare tire, I know how to change it, AND I have roadside assistance. Why? Because the car manufacturer (and I) considered that plausible Failure Mode. We each proactively put Failure Management Strategies in place to manage the consequences of that failure (๐˜ช.

What Failure Modes have you ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต considered that ๐™˜๐™ค๐™ช๐™ก๐™™ ๐™๐™–๐™ฅ๐™ฅ๐™š๐™ฃโ€ฆ?

This is a key responsibility of Responsible Custodianship. Itโ€™s no coincidence that itโ€™s part of the ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐—–๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ (๐—ฅ๐—–๐— ) process.

This is one of the great strengths of RCM. RCM compels us to:

  1. Get still and consider what
  2. Assess ๐™๐™ค๐™ฌ ๐™จ๐™š๐™ง๐™ž๐™ค๐™ช๐™จ it could be.
  3. ๐——๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ what (if any) Failure Management Strategies need to be put in place to manage it.

If youโ€™re not proactively identifying the plausible Failure Modes that could affect your equipment in your specific Operating Environment, it could be ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† โ€“ ๐˜ฝ๐™ž๐™œ ๐™๐™ž๐™ข๐™š!
