Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) is a time-honored, proven process that helps organizations achieve their Maintenance and Reliability goals. But, it’s often misunderstood and misapplied. In “Everyday RCM,” Nancy Regan sets forth RCM’s principles and purpose in a straightforward (and often fun!) manner using “everyday” examples. (She even gets Elvis, Batman, Chewbacca, and Vegas showgirls involved to help debunk some of RCM’s biggest misconceptions.) Enjoy!

Equipment performance degrades unless it is maintained properly. Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) can help you figure out what preventive maintenance and Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) you should be doing to get the Reliability you need from your equipment.

I’ve driven this route at least 3,000 times in the last 12 years. If you asked me if I would ever see a Tupperware-bowl-full of cut honeydew melon…or a pair of sneakers and an orange sitting atop a highway barrier, I would have said “𝘯𝘰.”

When it comes to our machines, we can do Condition-Based Maintenance and Preventive Maintenance in addition to other actions such as No Scheduled Maintenance or equipment redesigns. With those options available to us, how do we choose what to do and when to do them? This is a great strength of Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM). RCM helps us to identify the right maintenance to do and how often to do the maintenance tasks. For example, should a Scheduled Replacement task or a Condition Based Maintenance be implemented? Join me as I share how RCM can help us develop the right Proactive Maintenance so we can achieve the Reliability we need.

But one day, I was unpacking my grocery bags and found that I had bought banana flavored (yuck! 🥺) instead of Lemon Meringue.

There’s a big difference between MTBF and Useful Life. The two values are often misunderstood and misapplied when assigning Preventive Maintenance task intervals. In this video, I’ll explain which one is used to assign intervals for Scheduled Replacement and Scheduled Restoration tasks. We’ll also discuss Operating Context and how that can affect Manufacturer Recommended Maintenance. This is an “edutainment” video. If you’d like to skip the fun stuff (although I don’t know why you’d want to ☺️), I’ve time stamped the Reliability Moments below. Enjoy!

Protective Devices are important for our equipment and for our own safety. My guest, Miles, shows us a real-world Protective Device and explains how it could prevent disaster. Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) gives us powerful tools to decide how to maintain Protective Devices so they are ready to protect us in the event things go wrong. [Read more…]

Identifying the right Failure Modes is an essential part of a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA). One of the criteria for including a Failure Mode in an FMEA is if the Failure Mode is unlikely to occur, but has severe consequences. Doing so puts you in a position of strength to decide what, or if anything at all, should be done proactively to manage it. [Read more…]
