What oil analysis tests should you do and how often do you do them? In this live, Sanya Mathura and Nancy Regan give you a preview to their upcoming Live!
[Read more…]Everyday RCM
Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) is a time-honored, proven process that helps organizations achieve their Maintenance and Reliability goals. But, it’s often misunderstood and misapplied. In “Everyday RCM,” Nancy Regan sets forth RCM’s principles and purpose in a straightforward (and often fun!) manner using “everyday” examples. (She even gets Elvis, Batman, Chewbacca, and Vegas showgirls involved to help debunk some of RCM’s biggest misconceptions.) Enjoy!

When it comes to managing risk, there are three elements to consider and RCM can help you define all three. Watch as I manage risk and change consequences all at once!
- What happens when the failure occurs?
- How likely is it that the failure would occur?
- Is the risk tolerable?
Why should I learn about RCM?
Have you ever tried to implement any asset improvement activity but it didn’t go so well? Couldn’t rally the troops? Couldn’t get the kind of management buy-in that you really needed to get things off the ground? If so, you’re not alone.
I’ve read too many articles describing that up to 70% of asset improvement initiatives fail. And I think it’s because a lot of people don’t have a basic understanding of maintenance and reliability principles. So they don’t understand why “change” needs to take place.

Air, sea, space, land, or underground? Commercial, government, or military? Reliability Centered Maintenance has something for everyone!
Absolutely. In fact, in Stanley Nowlan and Howard Heap’s book on RCM, they state:
The content of scheduled-maintenance programs developed by experienced practitioners of MSG-2 techniques may be quite similar to the programs resulting from RCM analysis, but the RCM approach is more rigorous, and there should be much more confidence in its outcome. The RCM technique can also be learned more quickly and is more readily applicable to complex equipment other than transport aircraft.

Eighteen years ago, at a small restaurant in Bath, England, a former head of the Royal Navy’s RCM program said something very poignant to me. It answers this question.
[Read more…]At What Point in an Asset’s Lifecycle Should RCM be Applied?
To maximize the benefits, RCM should be applied as early in the lifecycle as possible, beginning with the design stage. But, most RCM analyses are done on legacy assets – in other words – on assets that are already fielded. And many are initiated decades after the system was fielded – especially in the case of government and military equipment.
What is Reliability Centered Maintenance?
RCM is one of the most powerful maintenance and reliability improvement processes out there. The name Reliability Centered Maintenance lends itself to a process that’s used to develop proactive maintenance for an asset – and it is. But RCM can be used to formulate scores of solutions that reach far beyond maintenance.
